“Play is a voluntary activity or occupation executed within certain fixed limits of time and place,
according to rules freely accepted but absolutely binding, having its aim in itself and accompanied by a
feeling of tension, joy, and consciousness that it is different from ordinary life.”
Johan Huizinga, Homo Ludens, 1938
“I wish you wouldn’t squeeze so,” said the Dormouse, who was sitting next to her. “I can hardly breathe.”
“I can’t help it,” said Alice very meekly: ”I’m growing.”
“You’ve no right to grow here,” said the Dormouse.
“Don’t talk nonsense,” said Alice more boldly: “you know you’re growing too.”
“Yes, but I grow at a reasonable pace,” said the Dormouse: “not in that ridiculous fashion. “
Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland
Plays have been in our lives since childhood and continue to shape our minds as adults. How
can we get inspired from the formulation of play to design creative environments? During this term, students are expected to design a “production space” for entrepreneurs who work for the “play” industry. The definition of production space is left quite vague so that students could flex it according to their own selection of play and scenario. Thus we expect to enhance student’s creative and reasoning skills.
