Lacunae in the Forest: A Lakefront Center

Istanbul Bilgi University, Faculty of Architecture, Department of Interior Architecture

2019-2020 / Fall,  Interior Design Studio, Spatial Narratives Module

Tutors: V. Şafak Uysal, İpek Kay

In this module, we will work within the socio-physical context provided by Gölcük Nature Park (Bolu) and its nearby surroundings. By conceiving architecture as a cultural medium that not only symbolizes power relations but is also an instrument and agent of power itself, we will approach Gölcük Nature Park (GNP) as a site that embodies various stories of framing, accessing and consuming nature as well as its complex entanglements in diverse forms and experiences of research, learning and recreation…

**lacuna (n.)

“blank or missing portion in a manuscript,” from Latin lacuna “hole, pit,” figuratively “a gap, void, want,” diminutive of lacus “pond, lake; hollow, opening”. The Latin plural is lacunae. The word has also been used in English in the literal Latin sense in anatomy, zoology, botany. Mathematics tends to use lacunary, natural history lacunose, and lacunar is used in the architecture of paneled ceilings, so-called for their sunken compartments. Leaving lacunal for the manuscript sense.
